But first, follow this guide on how to download free Landsat imagery from the USGS Earth Explorer.\n<\/p>\n\n<h3><span id=\"2-User-Interface\">2. User Interface<\/span><\/h3>\n\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\nUSGS Earth Explorer UI\n<\/p>\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/earthexplorer.usgs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>USGS Earth Explorer<\/strong><\/a> interface uses Google Maps. You can zoom in and out with the mouse wheel as if you are in Google Maps. Google street view is also enabled, where you can drop a marker and get a real view of the location.\n<\/p>\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\nFirst, you\u2019ll have to create an account with USGS. In the top-right corner, click the Register button. As it\u2019s a pretty painless process, you\u2019ll receive instructions to activate your account.\n<\/p>\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\nIn order to download data from USGS Earth Explorer, here are the four steps you\u2019ll need to follow:\n<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li>Set your search criteria<\/li>\n \t<li>Select your data to download<\/li>\n \t<li>Filter out your data<\/li>\n \t<li>Check your results and download<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Step 1 Set your area of interest in the \u201cSearch Criteria\u201d tab<\/h4>\n\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\nUsers can double-click the browser to create regions of interest. The region of interest (ROI) is the <strong>geographic boundary that limits the search to acquire data<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\n<strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong> The easiest thing to do is just to zoom into your area of interest. If you want to download free Landsat imagery for Hawaii, zoom into that area. Now, select the Use Map button. In the Landsat &gt; Landsat Collection 1 \u2013 Level 1 group, the most recent Landsat imagery is L8 OLI\/TIRS and L7 ETM+.\n<\/p>\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\nThe differences between the collections are based on data quality and level of processing. USGS has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/media\/videos\/landsat-collections-what-are-tiers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>classified images into tiers<\/strong><\/a> based on quality and processing level.\n<\/p>\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\nNow that we\u2019ve identified our area of interest in Hawaii in step 1, you can select a checkbox in the Landsat Archive category. On-demand means that you will be notified by email where you can download surface reflectance products from a separate interface for processing and data delivery.\n<\/p>\n\n<h4>Step 3 Filter your data in the \u201cAdditional Criteria\u201d tab<\/h4>\n\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\n90% of people go into the \u201cAdditional Criteria\u201d tab to easily <strong>filter out scenes with too much cloud cover<\/strong>. Now, you won\u2019t be able to filter to get the perfect cloudless image everyone wants. But you can set the cloud level to less than 10%, and this is what most people want\u2026 unless you\u2019re into meteorological studies.\n<\/p>\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\nHere\u2019s a brief explanation what each set of criteria does:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n \t<li>Set the <a href=\"https:\/\/gisgeography.com\/landsat-file-naming-convention\/\"><strong>Landsat scene identifiers<\/strong><\/a> which is a unique way for naming convention and includes WRS path and row within it<\/li>\n \t<li>Filter the temporal condition of the scene as a day\/night acquisition or nadir\/off-nadir<\/li>\n \t<li>Specific the quality of the scene with Level-1 (L1) data products being the best available processing level. The Processing Software Version is what was used to generate that L1 product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p data-v-1711fb4e=\"\">\nFor the average user, you won\u2019t need to set a lot of criteria.
